An extraordinary temple town, it prospered for more than 10 centuries, surrounded as it was by dense forests, alive with wild animals said to predate the Khajuraho temple, these are again a series of exquisitely carved temples chiseled by great craftmen who remained anonymous in the best Indian tradition. Hindu, Buddhist and jain cults are represented here, testifying to a great age of tolerance. A colossal statue of the 23rd Jain Tirthankara, Parashvanathan, an image of the elephant headed Ganesha with a woman seated on his knee, and a reclining Vishnu, are truly outstanding. A rare image of Vishnu in his “Varaha”(boar) incarnation is a theme repeated at Bhangarh and Talbraksha clearly indicative of the size of this Gujar-Partihar kingdom which reached its zenith, during 750-950 A.D.
