About Hemkunt

Hemkund is situated in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. It is a famous pilgrimage centre of the Sikhs. The holy place is located at an elevation of 15200 ft above sea level and can be reached on foot from Govindghat. Hemkund gets its name from the two Sanskrit words, Hem and Kund that means snow and bowl, respectively. What makes Hemkunt unique is its location amidst seven mountains, each of them is festooned with Nishan Sahib, a holy triangular flag of the Sikhs. The seven-peaked mountain is touted as Saptashrungi.

According to a mythological tale, this is the same place where the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji meditated for years and years.

Hemkunt is famous for its gurudwara - the Hemkund Sahib, that is dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The place is also mentioned in the Dasam Granth, the holy book of Sikhs, that was written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The construction of the Gurdwara was started in 1960 and was handled by Major General Harkirat Singh.
Tourists find a beautiful lake in proximity to the Gurdwara. The region is closed due to snow from October to April. In May, the Sikhs do ‘kar seva’ and help in repairing the damaged path. If time permits, tourists can also visit the Laxman Temple.
Vasudhara Falls, close to Badrinath is also a popular attraction here. Bounded by mountains, this stunning waterfall looks amazing with water falling from over 400 ft. You can explore the falls by trekking; from Mana Village.
Nanda Devi National Park is another prominent tourist attraction here. Perched at an altitude of 7817 m it is a leading attraction near Hemkund. The famous valley of flowers is situated towards its north-west. The Nanda Devi National Park together with the Valley of Flowers forms the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, that covers a total area of 2,236.74 sq.km, and is bound by a buffer zone of 5,148.57 sq.km.
