Getting here – How to Reach Sikkim

By Air (Flights):

Sikkim does not have any airports or railheads because of its rough terrain. However, Pakyong Airport the first airport of Sikkim is expected to be completed in 2012 and is located around 30 km from Gangtok.

The nearest operational airport from Sikkim is Bagdogra Airport, near the town of Siliguri in West Bengal is 124 kms from Gangtok. Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, SpiceJet, Go Air etc. service Bagdogra linking it with other major airport in India (including Guwahati). Druk Air flys twice weekly from Bangkok, stopping in Bagdogra before continuing to Paro in Bhutan.

Helicopter Service:

Sikkim Tourism offers the Sikkim Helicopter Service from Gangtok to Bagdogra Airport and back. The five-seater Helicopter offers an exclusive mode of transport not merely enabling connecting flights, but also to see Sikkim from an entirely new view.

By Train:

There are no railway links in Sikkim. The nearest railway stations are Siliguri (114 kms) and New Jalpaiguri (125 kms) in West Bengal which connects Sikkim to Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati and other important cities in India.

By Road:

National Highway 31A and National Highway 31 link Siliguri to Gangtok. Sikkim National Transport runs bus services and there are many privately operated buses as well, tourist taxi and jeep services operate throughout Sikkim, and also connect it to Siliguri. A branch of the highway from Melli connects western Sikkim. Towns in southern and western Sikkim are connected to the hill stations of Kalimpong and Darjeeling in northern West Bengal. The state is furthermore connected to Tibet by the mountain pass of Nathu La.
